Somatic Meditation
Take a brief walk with me…
If you have been living in the United States for the last 25 or so years, you might be well aware of the commodification of mindfulness and meditation as part of the ongoing wellness machine–what many dub McMindfulness.
Upon my initial step into mindfulness, I fell hard into the well laid trap of McMindful band-aid solutions to stresses, anxieties, and traumas from our capitalistic system. Essentially, I was stuck on the tip of the iceberg without any awareness of the hidden layers beneath me. And if I did manage a glimpse into one of these layers, I lacked the resources and capacity to explore them with compassion and wisdom.
Many first-time mindfulness practitioners like myself start with a common practice of bringing attention to the breath and tuning into your mind–following each thought like a passing cloud. While I might get a few micro-moments of stillness, clarity, and peace from this practice, I learned over time I was traveling along the same worn down cycle of stresses, anxieties, and traumas without any healing or revelatory transformation. What’s all this hype about mindfulness?!?!
Then I discovered somatic meditation and everything changed.
Somatic mediation shifts our attention to the body as our focal-point of meditation practice. And the discipline harkens back thousands of years through the lineages of Tibetan and Chan Buddhism as well as Taoism. When I refer to resting our awareness with the body, I am honoring three interrelated energetic bodies: the personal, the interpersonal, and the cosmic.
Personally, this method of practice became truly transformative. By meditating with the body, I made a vital and pivotal realization about my past mindfulness practice. Before somatics, I was reenacting my heady, intellectual, hyper-analytical and overwhelmed mind and disassociated body. I was practicing disembodied meditation of separating and disconnecting. Through somatic meditation, I learned and continue learning how to be an awakening and loving body – beginning a new path towards genuinely and profoundly embodying my wise and compassionate true self.
Come join me on this path to deepen your relationship with your awakening and loving body.
